Blackwater Falls was amazing! I would suggest going as early as possible when the state park opens. This is a very busy waterfall at the state park. It is very easy to get to with multiple observation decks along the way. Tons of hiking trails that have beautiful views and a lake to visit as well. They also have camping if interested. The gift store was very cool with lots of great gift ideas.By Cloressa Orr (3 months ago)We visited this gem on our anniversary weekend this past weekend. Our first stop before we even checked into our cabin, was the falls, and it was totally worth the trip. It is easily visible from the top, but if you’re willing and able to do some steps, it is totally worth the walk. The views from the different boardwalk viewing areas are stunning. There is no hiking, just stairs, so you don’t even need to change into your hiking boots. A little tip we got from the locals, “Go back after the rains”. So we went back on Sunday morning right before heading home, and it was totally worth the trip. We just happened to get a couple inches of snow Saturday night. Between that, and the difference in the pressure of the falls because of the rain, it was like a totally different place (as you can see in the pictures) We were so glad we took the time to go back! From the folks in the restaurant to the park rangers and everyone in between, they were helpful and kind.
My room was spotless and nicely updated. The entire lodge was very clean and the decor fit the setting.
As always, the highlight was the magnificent fall area. It’s just amazing to see and hear!

While you’re here don’t miss Lindy point. It’s only about 10 minutes or so away from the falls, and the view from the point is amazing! There are a lot of stairs but it is so worth the climb down and back up. I had the pleasure of spending a weekend at the Greenbrier recently and I absolutely understand why I have heard about the resort my entire life.
The resort itself is beautiful and the pictures do not do it justice, but the staff is what really makes this place shine. From check-in to check-out, every staff member I encountered was courteous, attentive, helpful, and accommodating. I would swear they are magical – whenever we returned to our room it was already tidied up to perfection with a fresh bucket of ice waiting for us. They truly go above and beyond to ensure every guest has the best experience, and this is also true of the staff in the steakhouse and in the main dining room (Oh, the food! Each bite of every single meal was succulent, rich, and perfect).
My grandfather loved going to the resort every year on his way to the Preakness, and it is easy to see why. Do not miss any opportunity to stay at the Greenbrier resort – I can assure you that I will not, and I will be actively seeking opportunities to stay there again in the future.

By David Milner (5 months ago)We recommend a day trip just to see it. Lots of retail inside and the grounds are magnificent. We didn’t stay in a room because they just aren’t our cup of tea. Way too much going on with the decor. Flower patterns on flower patterns with stripes in yellows, greens and reds. I prefer more subdued accommodations. Extraordinary place to visit and walk around for the afternoon though, be sure to dress appropriately so your not stared at or given a twice over up and down! If you need to get in the Christmas spirit, this is the place.The time you spend here will never be forgotten. Special shout out to Vickie in the Forum, Ada at West 44 and my new friend, James at the Lobby Bar.. Sipping a lovely beverage in the huge lobby, listing to the live cabaret by the fireplace and meeting the nicest people from all over the America. And although I’m not really a afternoon tea kind of guy, you realize that it’s not just afternoon tea, it’s the gathering of folks to share the experiences of the day. Thank you to the Justice family for preserving one of the great places to visit and enjoy and for taking the time to select team members who love their job because it really comes through in how they treat their guest. We had a wonderful time hiking the Red Spruce Knob Trailhead. This was a fairly easy 3 mile hike through the Spruce Trees to an opening and looping back. We only had a limited amount of time & chose this trail head. Campsites all along the river with bathhouses. Sites are secluded with rock fire pits and some are in a gathered area. It is my understanding camping is free which is pretty awesome. There was a parking area for people that were fishing next to the bridge. We seen the most beautiful rocks, trees, rivers edge, mountain ridge along river, tree trunks, native plants and fall foliage. We were able to find a tree that a bear had clawed up and you can clearly see this was a good sized bear from the damage done to the tree. This tree was located next to a campsite close to the road. The sounds of nature were most amazing. Lots of people were camping during our visit. 11/20/21By Anna Fox (a year ago)The mountains are always impressive. Unfortunately the same area off A14 / Middle Mountain Rd from Bartow was awful. I’ve been hunting and camping in the same general area and hiking the same trails for more than 40yrs. The 10 mile Dr to Laurel Fork Tr. Is rough at best. The log trucks have pretty much destroyed the road. Including the one we saw on its side, saved by the bordering trees. Then you have the mess they left righting the truck, trailer and retrieving their dumped logs.
We’ve always enjoyed hiking the “Loop Road” but this time the path was not passable. In fact, we didn’t see much of our previous camp sites and trails maintained at all.
It really is a shame and a wasted opportunity by the DNR to promote the vast amount of outdoor activities available. I’m guessing the local businesses would appreciate the support brought in by tourists and outdoor enthusiasts.
Fix the roads, maintain the trails, create USABLE camp sites (don’t just dump rock, level and fill a desirable site) and maintain them.
It’s a shame what the trails and camp sites have become over the years.

This state park is absolutely amazing. The glacier rock formations left are beautiful and astounding to look at. Going out onto the cliff for the scenic overlook is astounding. I can’t describe how far out you can see. There is also camping that was pretty affordable and spots just to have picnics and pavilions. There were a couple small playgrounds. There’s a pond you can fish in. We did an 8 Mile hike. We saw an old iron forge that was left behind. I would definitely recommend going here for the day if at all possible. Full hook up available in some parts. They said wifi was available but I wasn’t able to connect. Either was my partner who had to work while there. My 4 year old and new born took the roadside trail from our campsite to coopers rock. It was a lovely trail but maybe a little to long for children of those ages. Ravens Rock is another trail, but be ready to hike! Huge rocks jut out from the side of the mountain, puts in perspective how small we really are. If you’re interested in the lookout, head to the back of the park and then parking is 500 ft from the lookout, so it’s easy to get to- minimal walking! Parking in the fall is tough, so go early if you can! Beware of rattlesnakes when hiking the Henry Clay furnace route.

It was my first time in West Virginia and visiting this national historical park too. Parking – if it’s a nice day on a weekend weather wise get there early (8AM or earlier) to get a parking spot. I think there’s a shuttle near by but I couldn’t personally find it myself. Hiking- there are three multiple mile trails to select from which was awesome. Again, hitting the trails early help avoid that afternoon rush. My date and I did the C & O trail which was mainly flat and an a easy walk. Loved the rivers which was rapids but then went to a smooth calming water later. Sites – we also checked out Jackson’s rock which was cool. If you walk up the steps into the cemetery you get a nice view of the mountains and rivers. Food – pack a lunch on a nice weather day because the 4 restaurants open within walking distance from the park where packed. Overall, great place to visit for history and a good hike too.
A lovely place to go for a day trip or a quick hike. Though I’ve passed by this place many times, I’ve never stopped in the little historic town. The little town has a really interesting history and it was fun to step back in time.
Also they have great shops for Christmas gifts. I am definitely coming back to try the restaurants and cafes.
One of the best views of Maryland into Virginia. The town itself is beautiful and well preserved. The locals are very friendly and welcoming. The National Park parking fee is $20 to park a standard vehicle. $15 for motorcycles. There’s a free bus that take you to the lower part of town where there are shops and restaurants.
You can cross the bridge by the railroad to get to the overlook trail. It’s around 6 miles round trip. It’s a good hike. Not too steep or rocky. The paths are clear and mostly gravel with a few rocky patches. Bring your camera! There views are great in Autumn.
Quaint town chalked full of important history! We visited Friday @3:30pm and it was a quiet peaceful place. This was in sharp contrast to our visit on Saturday morning! This previously quiet place was bustling and busy, full of hikers, people in search of good food or soaking up the significance that surrounded them.
I definitely recommend stopping by just make a note that if you visit on the weekend the limited parking in town fills up fast. They do offer shuttles from the visitor center 2 miles away and they come about every 10-15 minutes. Just make sure to account for the extra time if you are limited!
It’s a beautiful downtown in the fall with a few places within walking distance to hike. Lots of small shops and restaurants. The views are great too. Almost no parking in downtown proper. Best bet is to buy a park pass (3 days is ~$20) and just take the shuttle in. It runs every 15 minutes or so.
