Beautiful garden and maintained very well! The paths are easy to walk on. The flowers were in full bloom. There were people just taking a stroll, sitting on park benches, or grabbing a bite with friends/coworkers. Great place to eat outside. I can imagine locals coming here for daily walks. There are probably events held at the park as well during the summer. Tours are offered and Volunteers are available to answer questions. A small coffee shop offers lighter fare for a snack. Test rooms are also available on site. Lovely bridges and meandering water features are planted with lovely trees, shrubs, and flowers.

Even on a hot day, nice breeze inside the garden. Entry is free and it’s in the hub of Halifax – saw a lot of buses so it’s well connected I think.
You can walk around or sit and enjoy all the different flowers.

Definitely one of the most popular things to do in Halifax! Highly recommend arriving around 11:00 a.m. as this will allow you to see the canon fired at noon and the changing of the guard at 1:00 followed shortly by a musket demonstration. We found that this was perfect timing. There are lots of History college students who are employed to tell you about the area so questions are easily answered. Also fun that they are dressed in time period attire. If you will plan on watching the canon, instead of lining up right next to it I would suggest going across the way. The explosion is still enough for you to feel and you will get a much better view. However, you will not be able to hear the explanation of what is going on that is given by one of the employees.By Melissa Arenson (7 months ago)It’s easy to see why this is THE signature attraction of Halifax. As first-timers to the city, this was first on the list – we were all enthused to see Canadian history unfold before us as we climbed the steps up the hill. The actors are very much into what they do, and the exhibits are very detailed. It even has a special exhibit on the D-day landing, as we know several vessels left Halifax for the event. We stayed for the 12noon cannon blast, which was spectacular. Even when leaving the fortress, we once again admired the view out over Halifax – you can’t beat this place for the perfect panoramic vista!By Jason Oliver (5 months ago)This place is much more fun than I expected! I loved the immersive experience I had while observing the soldiers playing drums/bagpipes and shooting their guns. There are two museums with lot of history with a great quantity of artifacts. Not only is it one of, it not the most recognizable spots in the city, it’s also a great place to take some photos, learn about history and relax on the hill on a sunny day.
It’s also in a great location in between both the big Halifax Commons park and the downtown core with a lot of the restaurants and other attractions.
They do offer guided tours, but only during certain times, so make sure to check in advance if you’re into that kind of thing.

Citadel Hill is awesome, we’ve photographed weddings here on several occasions and it’s always been incredible. It’s super unique, and located right in the centre of the city so it’s easy to get to anywhere else you’d want to go for portraits (but honestly no need, because you get everything in one place!). The casemates are super cool little rooms for a neat looking reception, and the actual fort is just super dope for photos and a sweet skyline view of the city. Walking the waterfront is my favourite thing to do in Halifax. The boardwalk is incredibly accessible and full of history, beautiful views and great food. Listening to local buskers and people watching is part of the journey. The colourful Adirondack chairs Harbourside are a great place to take in a drink or ice cream and enjoy the afternoon. Highly recommend.
I’ve been to the Halifax Waterfront several times during my visit this time. I enjoy the bustle of energy, the shops, people milling about, the bikers that hang out in front of the ferry terminal. Took one of the boat cruises, ate some lunch, bought a sweatshirt, bought a snow cone and some maple butter.
It was lovely when the sunshine was out.
Lovely, serene and historic. A place to relax, a place to explore, a place to enjoy. Eat, drink and be merry! Wear comfy shoes! If you climb the hill to the top take it nice and easy! Surprisingly, going downhill that steep was a challenge too and I was wishing I brought open toe sports sandals too. The whole place is a delight. Worth the visit!
What a wonderful job they have done on the Halifax waterfront. Just a pleasure to walk along the waterfront all the way down to the Cunard center. If you haven’t done it you are really missing out. Take the ferry from Alderney landing, the view is spectacular.
Stopped here on our last day in Nova Scotia. It was very nice and built out. Lots of beautiful views, benches, and even hammocks. I was a little disappointed with how many places were closed on a Sunday evening in October, but maybe I was just too late in the season. I recommend hoping in a ferry ride to get a nice tour of the area for cheap. There were a number of people that seemed to be very drunk walking around which was strange. Other than that, a very nice experience.
