Even though the park has lost some of its iconic oaks to storms, Bienville Square is a vibrant oasis in the heart of downtown. The park plays host to events all year long and is an enjoyable place for a picnic lunch or midday work break. Highly recommended!By Jack Sweeney (9 months ago)I love hanging out at the square. It’s very peaceful. There are plenty of restaurants in the area too. Don’t forget to stop by for some fresh peanuts. You can smell it before you open the door. The area looked well kept and there was minimal trash in the area. There are bathrooms located here, but they always seem to be locked for some reason. The fountain is being cleaned and refurbished to look like new. It’s the first time I’ve ever known this to be done since I moved here back in 1979. What a delightful experience at the Explorium science center located in Mobile, Alabama. We arrived around 1pm and they closed at 4. We had plenty of time to enjoy the exhibit, including the optical illusion, the interactive flight simulator, which we paid extra for, and we also paid extra for one of the movies in the dome theater. there is street side, parking and a parking lot but not a very large one. They have a snack, bar available with pizza, hotdogs, popcorn, and nachos and an assortment of beverages. a great place to bring children of any age or just come with a friend. The Exploreum is ideal for school-aged kids, but there’s something for all ages here. It amazes me how something like this was ever built, or how it’s survived as long as it has. It’s clear that they take very good care if the Alabama and Drum. Hats off to all the workers and volunteers of this place. Our visits are always quick here. It’s really hard to keep 5 young kids together in a place like this. But everytime we visit the kids are always talking about it for days. The battleship can get extremely hot and humid inside even though they have parts of it air conditioned. Be sure to take your time and bring a bottle of water. I you could easily spend an entire day here exploring and learning. But they closed down the concessions stand so plan on either bringing, or leaving to get lunch.
The bathrooms were clean, and every employee or volunteer we encountered were very nice and helpful.
We’ve been here several times over the last few years and it’s become a regular stop for us on our way to the gulf coast.
Keep up the great work on preserving this amazing part of history!
By James Brannin (3 months ago)Wow!!! This place is just amazing. The USS Drum is the best preserved submarine I have ever saw. There is military aircraft on display that I have never seen before, including a B-52 and A 12. There were tanks too. Of course the main attraction is the Battleship Alabama which is restored to perfection, and it still in the process of more restoration. It looks like the crew is just gone on shore leave. It’s an amazing place.By Jeff Fugate (10 months ago)A must-see! It’s a self-guided tour that was kind of difficult to follow but even if you just wander around you still get the full experience. Be prepared to climb lots of “ladder stairs.” I’m afraid of heights and it was a little difficult for me. A section was being renovated while we were there. Plan on several hours to see everything. There’s a nice display of historical information, planes, vehicles, etc. you can walk thru. Also, don’t forget to visit the USS Drum too. It’s a shorter tour but really cool. Overall it’s an amazing piece of history not to be missed!By Mike Konnie (6 months ago)Amazing experience seeing fighter jets of all kinds and some helicopters. So cool. They have some very rare equipment and even an sr71 blackbird. Or maybe an a12 not sure but it’s amazing to see pieces of history right in front of you. Then you go on a historic battleship and it’s so well preserved and there are amazing exhibits and tours to walk around a historic battleship. So glad they kept it around to share with new generations and i hope they get enough visitors to keep up the funding. The airplane hangar has a variety of airplanes that were used in a few wars with their history. This wonderful downtown museum was a delightful place to come explore on our trip to Mobile, Alabama. Located basically across the street from the rebuilt Fort Condé, it added historical information and context from before and after the Forts place in history as well as history of the Fort not covered in the replicas information. We saw lots of families with young children, senior citizens, tourists, locals, everybody. A tour of Fort Conde is also included. We enjoyed the exhibits, the Viking Exhibit goes on only a few more days, to June 12, 20022, see it before it leaves. We also saw a nautical themed exhibit, there is an exhibit for kids, but we skipped that. They have the story of mobile told in 22 items. It shares the changes of government and events like yellow fever. There’s an infant casket I couldn’t even bring myself to photograph. There isn’t much to see and it’s clear that not much effort was put into representing the african/ black experience & history. I did learn a little bit more than I knew given there was a decent amount of writing to go with a few commissioned paintings but that was it. We loved it! We spent 3 hours with our 3 children ages 5-9, and we didn’t realize we’d been there that long!
The self guided tours were easy to follow. You can choose to stay on the main level of the ship to get some of the history, watch a film in the theatre, and walk out onto the deck. The stair wells are unsurprisingly steep. Well worth it though if you’re able to go up and down!
The museum where you first come in has tons of aircraft. The submarine was a nice bonus.

Let me start by saying that I’m personally not affiliated with any branch of the military, nor is my wife. We were just looking for something to do in Mobile since we were only there for a day, and we sure glad we ended up going here. The stores and information told throughout the self guided tour really put into perspective what these brave people lived through. The memorials and information about the captain, officers and crew really touched us deeply. This is a great way to honor their sacrifices and effort. Well done!
As for the tours, there are 3 colored routes you can take, Yellow, Red & Green. All are self guided and all start from the same position. You’ll easily spend a few hours if you do all 3 routes, so keep that in mind. Also, try and stick to the markings and the paper they hand out, it will prevent you from losing your position and potentially skipping something. Traversing each level of the USS Alabama was very fun in itself, just be careful going up and down the ladders and it can get steep and narrow. The views from the upper levels of the freaking awesome and the engine room and sleeping quarters in the bowels of the ship are super interesting.
If you get the opportunity, do yourselves a favor and check it out at least once in your lifetime!
We loved the 3 different self guided tours with the arrows and the numbers to follow, it was excellent and super easy! Fascinating piece of history with little factoids all along the tour routes. The inside was nice with the a/c but topside was awful with the heat, we really wanted to go all the way to the top but the metal rails were burning our hands. The hanger with all the planes was awesome as was the sub, the USS Drum. There really needs to be a light at the entrance/exit to the park because getting in and out was a nightmare. All in all a great experience though and lots of fun.
This experience was amazing we spent 6 hours touring this site. Everyone should visit to better understand history. This museum provides a deeper appreciation of the sacrifices that were made defending our freedom. Donations are appreciated to help preserve this priceless piece of history! The retired volunteer service personnel were a wealth of knowledge. This would make a great class or group trip.
Fantastic! This is the best one word I can give this visit. Everything from parking to exploring was fantastic. This ship is huge it has so many levels and things to see and learn about. These is also a submarine, airplanes and tanks to see. Highly recommend visiting and then after your visit plan another one because you are sure to miss something on the 1st.
