Scattered Lava Landscape is the greatest feature of this national monument… Even few Astronauts compared this vast volcanic island with moon while describing moons surface. The cones are really wonderful to visit. I would recommend stopping along the side of the road somewhere along the way to the park to check out the landscape instead of going into the park if you don’t plan on camping there. The places outside the park have the same features, just no walking paths. Personally, I think it is a better experience seeing the raw landscape without other people around. There are some good trails, and the view from the top of inferno cone is awesome! It’s a bit of a climb, but my out of shape self made it no problem.
Be sure to talk to the rangers if you get a chance, they have a lot of good info!

Craters of the Moon is one of those places you have to see to believe. When we entered, on one side there was just rocks and the other side had mountains and a few large ponds with lush greenery. I visited the park but did not explore it. There are lots of different things there. I visited the rose garden, I crossed the bridge over the river, I passed by the entrance to the zoo and by the statue of Abraham Lincoln. Just walking around was relaxing and pleasant. Unfortunately, there were also a lot of misguided souls/predators who look at/follow/hound you as if you were their prey. One even stank up an area I was walking with what they assume is desirable. Great for a stroll around, bicycle , play a sport, and so forth. I gained knowledge, got a ton of free gear, took pics with ppl, they had entertainment, music, food, mechanical bullriding, art. Lots of info on plants found throughout the state. Currently there is a Fairy House exhibit, which was quite enjoyable. I recommend bringing a camera with extra batteries. So awesome! So much history. Plus so much to explore. Best part is they let you your the prison by yourself, and have information plastered all over the place. Definitely worth the price. After the tour when everyone left, we asked about if there have been any paranormal events. That’s when it got really interesting.

Inside the prison, there’s also an extensive weapons collection on display for free.The $3 guided tour is 100% worth it. Our guide, Jack, was super knowledgeable and clearly cared about sharing information with us. The tour includes stories and background which you can’t get from just the signs.

Shoshone falls park is absolutely worth the drive, worth the stop!! It is a gorgeous view, a beautiful grounds for having a picnic lunch, has restrooms to use, dog friendly, has a gift shop, and you can order lunch, snacks & drinks! The gal working the gift shop was SO nice! She was friendly, efficient, and down to earth. The view of the falls is spectacular, and we even made some new friends!
Overall, I highly recommend stopping her for a while to visit and take in the beautiful views!
A must-see on your tour of America’s sites. Taller than Niagara Falls, Shoshone is as breathtaking as it is beautiful. The powerful water streams are stunning to view, hear, and feel. The falls are thunderously loud. There is plenty of vehicle parking, with gentle green hills for children to play in or dogs to catch an exercise break. A small snack shop provides sundries. Tons of information about Shoshone is posted throughout. Take a guided or self-guided tour, up to you. There are trails that extend into the Canyon Rim if you’re feeling athletic, or simply want a different vantage point of the falls. I love visiting – we usually catch a rainbow in the mist 🌈
Shoshone Falls Park is a beautifully maintained park along the Snake River in Idaho. The park has sweeping views of the Snake River Gorge and Shoshone Falls. The falls were particularly impressive when we were there because of recent rains.
The park has loads of parking spots, loads of green grass with shade trees and picnic tables. There is an easy walk on pavement to see the Snake River Gorge and Shoshone Falls. There are plenty of restrooms as well.
Do yourself a favor and give Shoshone Falls Park and Shoshone Falls a twirl, you will not be disappointed!

Shoshone Falls Park was a delightful experience. The falls were beautiful, the grass lush green, even in August. Well manicured areas to throw down a picnic.
The road from the gate to the falls could use some work, yet that is understandable considering the terrain. Take your time around the corners and you shall be fine easy in , easy out. Ample parking and I do suggest that RVs and those pulling a trailer use the designated parking for such vehicles.
Safety note, the signs that warn of danger are not a joke and I employ person’s to heed them, as they are there for a reason
The concession stand was well maintained and had great prices. Do not expect a Kobe burger flown in from Japan, it is just a burger.
Thus saying the price is right.
Enjoy the trip to and from and take a bit of time to look at the falls from different angles, provided in different areas. Shoshone Falls is definitely worth a visit and a bit of time to relax and enjoy the beauty that is our planet full of wonders.
Early morning is a lovely time to visit. I arrived early enough that they hadn’t opened the spillway and you can see a picture where the waterfall wasn’t flowing. An hour later they had opened the dam and the waterfall was running in all it’s non-spring glory. Spring time is amazing in comparison as the whole waterfall from side to side is cascading.
There is a path for bicycling and walking toward the rim and along it. It’s well worth the experience. The beautiful stream waterfall in my pictures is available at the head of that path and is a lovely place to sit and enjoy for a couple minutes
